Manning, Cardinal Henry Edward, D.D., was b. July 15, 1808, at Copped Hall, Totteridge, Herts, and was educated at Harrow and at Balliol College, Oxford. He was sometime Archdeacon of Chichester, joined the Church of Rome 1851, became Archbishop of Westminster 1865, and Cardinal 1875, d. Jan. 14, 1892. See the details of his career in the Life by E. S. Purcell, 1895, in A. W. Hutton's Cardinal Manning, 1892, &c. He was a voluminous writer, a famous preacher, and a well-known philanthropist and temperance worker. His connection with hymnody was slight. He contributed a translation to the Holy Family Hymns, 1860, noted under Grignon, L. M.
