Representative Text

1 What can make this sinful world to blossom as the rose?
Nothing but the love of Jesus;
Where can balm be found to heal its sorrows and its woes?
Nothing but the love of Jesus.

Chorus:
Love that wipes the tears from sorrow’s weeping eyes;
Love that lights the gloom and points us to the skies;
All in earth or heav’n that fully satisfies,
Nothing but the love of Jesus

2 What can turn the Christless millions from their sins away?
Nothing but the love of Jesus;
What can change their heathen darkness into bright noonday?
Nothing but the love of Jesus. [Chorus]

3 What will satisfy the heart when earthly comforts fail?
Nothing but the love of Jesus;
What will light the way when passing thro’ death’s gloomy vale?
Nothing but the love of Jesus. [Chorus]

4 What are angels singing now around the heav’nly throne?
Nothing but the love of Jesus;
What the theme of saints redeemed when in the song we join?
Nothing but the love of Jesus. [Chorus]

Author: Mrs. C. H. Morris

Lelia (Mrs. C.H.) Morris (1862-1929) was born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio. When her family moved to Malta on the Muskingum River she and her sister and mother had a millinery shop in McConnelsville. She and her husband Charles H. Morris were active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the camp meetings in Sebring and Mt. Vernon. She wrote hymns as she did her housework. Although she became blind at age 52 she continued to write hymns on a 28-foot long blackboard that her family had built for her. She is said to have written 1000 texts and many tunes including "Sweeter as the years go by." Mary Louise VanDyke Go to person page >
