Notes

While health and youth and strength remain. [Early Piety.] This hymn appeared with three others including “Praise the Lord, ye heav'ns adore Him," on a supplementary sheet appended to the musical edition of the Foundling Collection, 1796, and to the book of words issued in 1801. In the 1809 edition of that Collection. it was included in the body of the work, and thence passed, in 1810, into J. Kempthorne's Psalms & Hymns, No. cxcviii. in 4 stanzas of 4 lines, and somewhat considerably altered. Although still retained in the Foundling Collection, it has almost altogether fallen out of common use. On the authority of D. Sedgwick this hymn is usually ascribed to J. Kempthorne, but there is no evidence whatever in his favour. Its ascription is Anon. Foundling Collection, 1796. [William T. Brooke]
