1 Zion klager med for Smerte,
Zion, Guds udvalgte Stad,
Den, som ligger ham paa Hjerte,
Men dog under Verdens Had;
Ak, hvi haver du, min Gud,
Siger hun, forglemt din Brud,
Hvi lar du mig saa fortrykkes,
Og min Fiendes Anslag lykkes?

2 Gud, som mig saa vist forjætter
Bistand i al Sorg og Nød,
Ser, at jeg mig daglig mætter
Med min Graad og Askebrød;
Ak, mon han dog altid saa
Vil mit Suk og Bøn forsmaa?
Vil hans Vrede sig ei vende
Og pa Nøden gjøre Ende?

3 Zion, sødeste Veninde!
Saadant Svar gav Herrens Mund:
Jeg ser vel dit Øie rinde
Af beklemte Hjertegrund,
Men giv dig igjen tilfreds;
Hvor er vel paa Jordens Krebs
Saadan Moder, som kan hade
Barnet sit, og det forlade?

4 Ja, om du end kunde finde
Saadant unaturligt Sind,
Og se Kjærlighed forsvinde,
Hvor den mest er platnet ind,
Jeg dog blive skal mod dig
Trofast og miskundelig;
Før skal Dal og Bjerge vige,
End min Kjærlighed skal svige.

5 Lad ei Satan dig bedrage,
Som han agter, tro mig vel,
Lad ham ingen Frygt indjage
I din sorrigfulde Sjæl!
Dit Navn skal antegnet staa
I min Haand, hvor kan jeg da
Glemme dig? din Mur skal bygges
Og i Evighed ei rygges.

6 Du er stedse for mit Øie,
Ja, du ligger i mit Skjød
Som et lidet Barn, jeg nøie
Skuer al din Brøst og Nød,
Dig og mig skal ingen Strid,
Nød og Fare nogen Tid,
Ja ei Satan selv abskille,
Fat det Løfte, og vær stille!

Johann Heermann's (b. Raudten, Silesia, Austria, 1585; d. Lissa, Posen [now Poland], 1647) own suffering and family tragedy led him to meditate on Christ's undeserved suffering. The only surviving child of a poor furrier and his wife, Heermann fulfilled his mother's vow at his birth that, if he lived, he would become a pastor. Initially a teacher, Heermann became a minister in the Lutheran Church in Koben in 1611 but had to stop preaching in 1634 due to a severe throat infection. He retired in 1638. Much of his ministry took place during the Thirty Years' War. At times he had to flee for his life and on several occasions lost all his possessions. Although Heermann wrote many of his hymns and poems during these devastating times, his persona… Go to person page >

In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries. Go to person page >
