What a Friend We Have in Jesus (Oh, qué amigo nos es Cristo)

Author: Joseph M. Scriven, 1819-1866; Leandro Garza Mora, 1854-1938 Hymnal: Santo, Santo, Santo #585 (2019) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: Luke 11:1-13 First Line: What a friend we have in Jesus (¡Oh, qué amigo nos es Cristo!) Lyrics: 1 What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Ev'rything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit; Oh, what needless pain we bear– All because we do not carry Ev'rything to God in prayer. 2 Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged– Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our ev'ry weakness– Take it to the Lord in prayer. 3 Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge– Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer. In his arms he'll take and shield you; You will find a solace there. In seasons of distress and grief My soul has often found relief, And oft escaped the tempter's snare By thy return, sweet hour of prayer. 2 Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer, Thy wings shall my petition bear To Him whose truth and faithfulness Engage the waiting soul to bless; And since He bids me seek His face, Believe His word and trust His grace, I'll cast on Him my ev'ry care, And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer. 3 Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer, May I thy consolation share, Till from Mount Pisgah's lofty height I view my home and take my flight: This robe of flesh I'll drop, and rise To seize the everlasting prize, And shout, while passing through the air, "Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!" Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee

Author: Edward Caswall, 1814-1878 Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #420 (2003) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Luke 11:9 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, the very thought of thee with sweetness fills my breast; but sweeter far thy face to see, and in thy presence rest. 2 No voice can sing, no heart can frame, nor can the the mind recall a sweeter sound than thy blest name, O Saviour of us all! 3 O hope of every contrite heart, O joy of all the meek, to those who ask, how kind thou art, how good to those who seek! 4 But what to those who find? Ah, this no tongue nor pen can show; the love of Jesus, what it is none but his loved ones know. 5 Jesus, our only joy be thou, as thou our prize wilt be; Jesus, be thou our glory now, and through eternity.
