1 As I lay one night adreaming
Of the days that now are gone,
I was carried back to childhood
To a quiet little home;
After years of sin and sorrow
I had so’t my home once more
And I heard my mother singing
Songs she sang in days of yore.
Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

2 Hark! the singing now is over,
I can hear the voice in prayer,
For her child she’s gently pleading
Kneeling by the old arm chair,
‘Tis a prayer of faith and pity,
Yet her words with love we’ll ring,
Then she stops—I pause to listen,
I can hear her sweetly sing.
Jesus lover of my soul,
Let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll,
While the tempest still is high.

3 But alas! I’m only dreaming
Ne’er here I’ll see her face again;
Many years has that dear mother
In a quiet churchyard lain,
Tho’ she’s gone to her Redeemer,
Yet her words with love still ring,
By her grave in dreams while standing
I can hear her sweetly sing.
Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe on His gentle breast,
There, by His love o’ershaded,
Sweetly my soul shall rest.
