68. The World His Plain Humanity

1. The world his plain humanity,
His message now disdain,
And nothing great in Jesus see,
The humble Son of man,
But we who Christ aright have known
And see with inward eyes
Adore him, lowly Joseph's Son,
Who made both earth and skies.

2. In ancient days, when prophets like
Elijah roamed the land,
None found relief from famine sore
Save one with open hand.
Tho' many struck by leprosy
Could reach Elisha's feet,
Naaman, who hailed from foreign soil,
Was offered such relief.

3. We tell the proud, indignant race
That Heav'n is due to none;
The source and principle of grace
Is hid in God alone;
The number of believers here
In Heav'n's account is small,
Yet still the God of love we clear,
Who offers life to all.
