I. O the agonizing prayer
Rising on the midnight air!
"Let this cup pass from thy Son:
Not my will, but thine be done!"
Jesus in Gethsemane!
II. O the tears and bloody sweat
Falling fast on Olivet!
In thy lonely agony,
Shedding crimson tears for me,
Jesus in Gethsemane!
III. O what wrath of earth and hell
On thy head unpitying fell,
When Thy passion-time began,
Bearer of the sin of man,
Jesus in Gethsemane!
IV. Sorrow none had ever known
Came upon thy soul alone:
While its billows o'er thee swept,
Near at hand thy followers slept,
Jesus in Gethsemane!
V. Waken me from sinful sleep:
Faithful, loving, make me keep,
Watching every hour with thee
Who didst agonize for me,
Jesus in Gethsemane!
VI Crimson'd once, but beauteous now,
O what glory crowns thy brow!
All the world shall bend the knee,
Lord triumphant! unto thee,
Conqueror in Gethsemane!
