| Tune: | [Harke Israel, and what I say give heed to understand] |
| harmonizer: | J. Farmer |
1 Harke Israel, and what I say
give heed to understand:
I am the Lod thy God that brought
thee out of Egypt land.
Even from the house wherin thou didst
in thraldome live a slave:
None other gods at all before
my presence shalt thou have.
2 No manner graven Image shalt
thou make at all to thee:
Nor any figure like to thee
shall counterfaited be
Of any thing in heaven above,
nor in the earth below:
Nor in waters beneath the earth,
to them thou shalt not bow.
3 Nor shalt them serve, the Lord thy God
a jealous God am I,
That punish parents faults unto
the third and fourth degree
Upon their children that me hate:
and mercy doe display
To thousands of such as me love
and my precepts obay.
4 The name thou of the Lord thy God
in vaine shalt never use:
For him that takes his name in vaine,
the Lord will not excuse.
Remember that thou holy keepe,
the sacred Sabbath day:
Sixe dayes thou labour shalt, and doe
thy needfull workes alway.
4 The seaventh day is set by the Lord,
thy God to rest upon:
No worke then shalt thou doe in it,
ne thou, nor yet thy sonne,
Thy daughter, servant, nor handmaid,
thine Oxe, nor yet thine Asse:
Nor stranger that within thy gates
hath his abiding place.
5 For in sixe dayes God heaven and earth,
and all therein did make:
And after those his rest he did
upon the seaventh day take.
Wherefore he blest the day that he
for resting did ordain:
And sacred to himselfe alone,
appointed to remaine.
6 Yeeld honour to thy parents, that
prolongde thy dates may be
Upon the land, the which the Lord,
thy God hath given thee.
Thou shalt not murther. Thou shalt not
commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal. Nor witnesse false
against thy neighbour be.
7 Thou shalt not covet house that to
thy neighbour doth belong:
Ne covet shalt in having of
his wife to doe him wrong.
Nor his man servant, nor his maide
nor Oxe nor Asse of his,
Nor any other thing that to
thy neighbour proper is.
