73. O that Thy ardent flames were kindled

1 O that Thy ardent flames were kindled, Unfathomable depth of love! May all the universe acknowledge That Thou art King and Lord above. 2 Already it doth burn with brightness; See here and there in west and east, To Thee the Lamb as ransom offered, A glorious pentecostal feast. 3 And still this heav’nly spark igniteth So many cold and lifeless hearts; It fills the longing soul with gladness And heals from sin and Satan’s darts. 4 All self-esteem and pride destroying, Removes impure and guilty stain; The streams of Jesus’ love enjoying, By which we God’s rich grace obtain. 5 Thou never ceasing, living fountain, Almighty witness, ever true, Thy grace and love may not be wasted, Inflame our hearts with love anew! 6 O link together what has scattered, Complete Thy temple! Keep Thy vows! Illuminate with sacred brightness The holy church, Thy Father’s house! 7 Revive, inflame, redeem, enlighten Ere long all peoples through Thy word; Appear to ev’ry tribe and nation As Saviour, Prince of Peace, and Lord! 8 Then from the lips of countless numbers The songs of Jubilee will flow; Thy fame shall sound from ev’ry region And all the ransomed saints will glow.
