The library has 3,000 cataloged hymnals from collections of Luther Reed, Charles Porterfield Krauth, Jeremiah F. Ohl, Jacob A. Seiss, and the Hymn Society of America (duplicates culled pre-1950 from the Hymn Society’s collection). Special strengths in German and Lutheran works from Reformation era on. Strong collection in liturgics and thorough collection of 16th and 17th century German kirchenordnung. Collection includes the Achtliederbuch, several early printings of Luther’s Deutsche Messe, and the personal papers of Luther Reed, including pre-press notations to the Service Book and Hymnal. The Lutheran Archives Center at Philadelphia, located on site, has early American Lutheran music manuscripts. Date range: 16th c.–present.
