The Sacred Music Collection includes the Hymn Society of America Collection. The Burke Library has several thousand hymnals, of which approximately 900 are in the Hymn Society of America Collection. The date range is seventeenth to twentieth centuries, with the majority of hymnals falling in the period of 1860 to 1985. The majority of hymnals are English-language with American imprints, but there is also a useful and interesting selection of non-English-language and/or non-U.S. imprints. The library collects new hymnals of all major U.S. denominations and some foreign hymnals. Hymnals cataloged from 1976 on are rep-resented in SOPHIA, the online catalog of Union and General Theological Seminaries. Many of the pre-1976 catalog records are in the twenty-volume book catalog of the Union Theological Seminary, Shelf List of the Union Theological Seminary Library . . . in Classification Order and Alphabetical Arrangement of Main Entries (G. K. Hall, 1960). Papers of hymnologist Frederick Mayer Bird (1838–1908), five boxes. No finding aid. Date range: 17th-20th c.
