John D. Bacon was born March 1, 1900 in New Hope, Texas. He attended the College of Marshall (today East Texas Baptist University) in Marshall, Texas, where he took the opportunity to study music. He was a song leader in the Churches of Christ and taught singing schools as an avocation.
