Ela, David Hough, D.D., was born in Maine in 1831. In 1860 he entered the ministry of the American Methodist Episcopal Church. His hymn: "The chosen three, on mountain height" (Transfiguration), was written in 1877 and published in the Methodist Episcopal Hymnal, 1878.

Ela grad­u­at­ed from Wes­ley­an Un­i­ver­si­ty, with hon­ors, in 1857, and en­tered the Amer­i­can Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal min­is­try in 1860. In 1876, he earned his Doc­tor of Di­vin­i­ty de­gree from Cor­nell Un­i­ver­si­ty. For two years he was prin­ci­pal of the East Green­wich Sem­in­ary.
