1 My Heart! Be contented, oh, be not depressed!
Whatever befalls you will be for the best.
When misfortune meets you
Like pelting rain greets you,
Remember that sunshine is not far away.
Oh, heart, be contented and grieve not today.
2 Your sadness and worry solves nothing at all.
He who is serenely content will not fall.
Who does with great pleasure
Whatever God's measure
Will live with great blessings on Earth as was wrought
Because his contentment is pleasing to God.
3 The only true pleasure in this can abide:
That I be contented whatever betide.
It's easy declaring
In days of well faring
That my God is good and contented am I.
Oh, heart, be contented when things go awry.
4 A heart full of pleasure is better than gold.
I would not exchange it for riches untold.
There are gifts and talents
Bestowed without balance.
Well-being to him who to this can attest.
So I say contentment is always the best.
