1 Singing makes the heart content
When with grace the song is blent.
When the soul is energized
With the love of Jesus Christ.
2 Pleasing is the song we sing;
Harps cannot more pleasure bring.
Lovely, pleasing notes abound
In this wondrous, blessed sound.
3 It refreshes heart and soul
As it rises to its goal,
Painless, from a sea of grace
To our heav'nly God in praise.
4 Unrehearsed though it may be,
Still it rings with clarity,
With the angels' song enmeshed
As it flows from loving breast.
5 Song of love this singing is,
Bringing all things one might wish:
Light and life and peace and rest
Flowing to the heart's behest.
6 Joy and bliss, more than one knows,
Life with pleasure overflows.
Here must be the flowing well
Where all good, true singers dwell.
7 Jesus, teach to me the art
How to sing within the heart
So my song will be expressed
When the spirit is at rest.
8 Heart and mouth shall sing content
From the spirit's fundament,
Halleluia from within.
Well to them who thus can sing.
