Born: March 25, 1848, in the rectory of St. Mary’s, Whitechapel, London, England.
Died: July 30, 1930, Nutley, Sussex, England.
Francis’ father was William Champneys, Canon of St. Paul’s, and later Dean of Lichfield. Francis was educated at Winchester College and Brasenose College, Oxford (MA & MB 1875, MD later). An amateur musician, he studied under John Goss, held various musical positions from 1880 to 1913, and chaired the Central Midwives’ Board (1903-30). He was made a Baronet in 1910.
