87. All My Anguish and Afflictions

1 All my anguish and afflictions
Will come to an end in time.
All my sighs, my cares and tensions
Only known to God sublime
Will not last forevermore.
Sunshine will break forth once more
Through the clouds when rains are over.
Then my spirit will recover.

2 All the goodness I foretasted
Will increase abundantly.
After all the thorns lie wasted
A good harvest there will be.
When the storm clouds disappear,
We will see a sky now clear.
After all the tears and sorrow,
There will be a bright tomorrow.

3 If we want to gather roses,
There are always thorns to heed.
We may suffer trials, abuses.
All is planned by God indeed.
He has showed us our goal,
Knows what benefits our soul.
If we want to find the treasure,
There will be no time for leisure.

4 Our way leads up to heaven,
Though beset with many cares.
Here on earth our course is given.
Thorns may catch us unawares.
Everyone in God's domain
Here on earth has suffered shame.
Ere to heav'n they can aspire,
Crowns of thorns are their attire.

5 Truly, ev'ry firm believer
With much sorrow was assailed.
Oftentimes he had to suffer
But God's goodness has prevailed:
With palms in their hand they stand,
Transferred to a better land.
Facing God's throne, gold and glorious,
And with golden crowns, victorious.

6 God's plan has a firm foundation.
This rock will remain steadfast.
His friends, who have seen temptation,
Now no more will be downcast.
Israel will victor be
After fighting valiantly.
Only after much oppression
Is salvation our possession.

7 My soul, therefore bear affliction,
In your suff'ring patient be.
God will offer His protection,
In His bosom safe you'll be.
There will break a fairer dawn
After storms and clouds are gone.
Night will yield to morning's splendor;
Joy will triumph, gloom surrender.
