194. We Hail Thee, Blessed Saviour

1 We hail Thee, blessed Saviour,
Who left Thy lofty throne;
And to the earth descended,
With mankind made Thy home;
O Christ what degradation,
To take on human birth,
That from the chains of Satan
Thou mightst release the earth.

Refrain:
Sing! sing! sing! sing!
While the glad bells ring,
Hymns of praise unto our heav’nly King;
Sing! sing! sing! sing!
While the glad bells ring,
To Him whose birth redeem’d the earth,
Your sweetest anthems sing.

2 In Bethlehem the blessed,
Upon the Virgin’s breast,
Thou Prince of earth and heaven,
A little child did reset;
That tender form so helpless,
Her gentle arms entwine,
Had strength to save, far greater,
Than earthly pow’r combin’d. [Refrain]

3 What costly gem, or treasure,
Can we lay at Thy feet?
What words of love, or praises,
Our trembling lips repeat;
For this great love Thou beareth,
On sinful man bestow;
And leave Thy home in heaven,
To live with us below. [Refrain]
