341. Blest is the man whose heart is kind

1 Blest is the man, whose heart is kind
And melts with pity to the poor;
Who, with a sympathizing mind,
Feels what his fellowmen endure.

2 His heart contrives for their relief
More good than his own hands can do;
He in the time of gen'ral grief
Shall find, the Lord hath pity too.

3 This man shall live secure on earth,
With secret blessings on his head;
Though sword, or pestilence, or dearth
Around him multiply their dead.

4 Or, if with mortal suff'rings try'd,
Suff'rings shall all his soul refine,
Sweet hope his refuge shall provide,
And minister a bliss divine.
