363. This is the day when from the dead

1 This is the day when from the dead
Our mighty Saviour rose,
And crushed beneath his conquering tread
The last of all our foes.

2 How could the Lord of life be bound
Within the narrow cell,
When in His hands divine are found
The keys of Death and Hell?

3 The second man, the Lord from heaven,
A quickening spirit He,
All power into His hands is given
To set the prisoners free.

4 From Satan's dark and cruel sway,
From death's degrading fear,
He who destroyed their power today
Makes our deliverance clear.

5 Then let us one and all rejoice
Around the open tomb.
And sing to Him with heart and voice
Who dissipates its gloom.
