1551. The Flocks Were Wrapped in Slumber

1. The flocks were wrapped in slumber r /> all along the dewy ground,r /> The shepherds lay in silence r /> keeping watch on all around.r /> They little thought such sight to see r /> before their watch should cease,r /> Now glory be to God on high, r /> and on the earth be peace.r />

2. The angel of the Lord came down r /> in floods of dazzling light,r /> Above the brightness of the sun r /> when he goes forth in might;r /> His voice, it was so wondrous sweet, r /> it made their hearts to thrill,r /> Now glory be to God on high, r /> and unto men goodwill.r />

3. Fear not, he said, I bring glad news; r /> in David’s town this morn,r /> To you and all the world a Savior, r /> Christ the Lord, is born;r /> This day is born the Savior Christ, r /> to save us from all ill;r /> Now glory be to God on high, r /> and unto men goodwill.r />

4. Then opened Heaven’s chancel, r /> while the shepherds gazed in fear,r /> Out trooped the choir of angels; r /> oh, the blessedness to hear!r /> And loud they sang as though the heavens r /> were not enough to fill;r /> Now glory be to God on high, r /> and unto men goodwill.r />

5. Oh, praise the Lord of hosts r /> who sent His singers sweet that night,r /> From the holy place of Heaven, r /> from the choir that needs no light;r /> Let love this holy season keep; r /> let strife and turmoil cease,r /> And glory be to God on high, r /> and on the earth be peace.
