7885. Tenderly The Savior Listened

1 Tenderly the Savior listened
To the voice of grief or pain;
Oft His eyes with teardrops glistened,
No one sought His help in vain.
Now, amid the choirs of Heaven,
Still He hears our faintest prayer;
May this grace to me be given,
Thy devotion let me share.

Refrain:
Swift to hear, slow to speak:
Lord, in this Thy grace I seek;
Slow to wrath, O may I be,
Dearest Savior, more like Thee!

2 Silently endured the Savior
Cruel taunts, the scourge, the cross,
For His heav’nly Father’s favor
Counting all things else but loss.
Thus may I, thro’ pain or sorrow,
Calmly walk without alarm.
From Thy patience let me borrow,
Leaning silent on Thine arm. [Refrain]

3 Was it not enough, O Savior,
For us sinful men to die?
Spite of all our ill behavior,
Thou dost plead for us on high!
In the light of such compassion,
Shall I not forgiven be?
Let Thy free and full salvation
Magnify itself in me. [Refrain]
