171. O Tidings Glad

1 That morning gray of Easter Day,
See, women seek the tomb;
On falt’ring feet, with spices sweet
And heats forlorn they come;
When, wondrous sight and glorious news!
Their quicken’d hearts behold
The stone of death now roll’d away,
By angel pow’r untold.

Refrain:
Rejoicing, rejoicing,
We join with them and say:
“He’s risen, He’s risen,
This glorious Easter Day!”

2 “Why seek the living ‘midst the dead?”
The angels softly say:
“Your Lord is risen, as He said,
This glorious Easter day.
Go, spread the tidings far and wide!
Your Lord triumphant lives!
His work is o’er, and evermore,
Eternal life He gives.” [Refrain]

3 O heart bow’d down with any woe,
Look up, the blessing see!
He who hath borne our sorrows so,
Has balm for you and me.
No more to die, He lives on high,
For us to intercede;
O tidings glad! no more be sad!
The Lord is ris’n indeed. [Refrain]
