352 | The Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, as adopted by the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1892#353 | 354 |
Text: | My God, permit me not to be |
Author: | Isaac Watts |
Tune: | [My God, permit me not to be] |
Composer: | Beethoven |
1 My God, permit me not to be
A stranger to myself and Thee:
Amidst a thousand tho'ts I rove,
Forgetful of my highest love.
2 Why should my passions mix with earth,
And thus debase my heavenly birth?
Why should I cleave to things below,
And all my purest joys forego?
3 Call me away from flesh and sense;
Thy grace, O Lord, can draw me thence:
I would obey the voice divine,
And all inferior joys resign.
Amen.
