1 Whither go ye, pilgrim strangers,
Passing thro' this darksome vale?
Know ye not 'tis full of dangers,
And will not your courage fail?
Chorus:
Pilgrims thou dost justly call us,
Wand'ring o'er this world so wide,
Yet no harm can e'er befall us,
While we're blessed with such a guide.
2 Such a guide--no guide attends you,
Hence my fears must still arise;
If a guardian power befriend you,
'Tis unseen by mortal eyes.
Chorus:
Yes, unseen, but still believe us,
Such a guide doth still attend,
He'll from every strait relieve us,
He from every harm defend.
3 Pilgrims, see that stream before you,
Darkly winding thro' the vale,--
Should its deadly waves roll o'er you,
Would not then your courage fail?
Chorus:
No, that stream has nothing frightful
To its brink our steps we'll bend,
Thence to pass 'twill be delightful,
Then our pilgrimage will end.
