Text: | When Jesus Knocks |
Author: | Mrs. H. D. Carmichael |
Tune: | [When Jesus knocks, our startled eyes] |
Composer: | J. H. Tenney |
1 When Jesus knocks, our startled eyes
See cherished sins in loathsome guise;
The evil thought, we scarce confessed;
Crawls out and mocks us with the rest.
When Jesus knocks,
When Jesus knocks.
2 He knocks again, and longing eyes
Catch a sweet glimpse of Paradise,
Of “pastures green,” of “Waters still,”—
And angel pinions fan and thrill,
When Jesus knocks,
When Jesus knocks.
3 When Jesus knocks sometimes we see
But weary pilgrim guest, may by,—
Tho’ food nor shelter craveth he:
“Give me thine heart,” the only plea,
When Jesus knocks,
When Jesus knocks.
4 When Jesus knocks, oh! heart of mine
Grieve not the messenger divine;
Say not to him, “Some other day:”
The gracious time may pass away,
When Jesus knocks,
When Jesus knocks.
