1 Do the thing that’s next you!
‘Tis God’s work for you;
has the nearby vexed you?
Is it hard to do?
Still the duty next you,
Which has sore perplexed you,
Just be done by you, if
To God you would be true.

Then do the duty next you,
If you would be true;
‘Tis the Master’s bidding,
“This for Me ye do.”

2 Do the thing that’s next you!
Look not far away,
In the distant morrow
Losing life’s today.
Duty’s in the present,
Pleasant or unpleasant;
As a faithful servant,
Christ’s call you must obey. [Refrain]

Work lies close at hand;
Do not miss the simple,
Dreaming of the grand.
Filled with love sincerest,
Touch the soul that’s nearest,
Meet the need severest,
