56. The Lord will come, and He is near

1 The Lord will come, and He is near
To meet His own with gladness.
O that His vision would appear;
Great joy would banish sadness.
If now today in majesty,
We’d see Him come, then surely we
Would weep for joy and gladness!

2 O, that before Him now the earth
And heaven would be fleeing,
And we the token of the Son,
High in the clouds were seeing,
In godlike majesty abound!
O, that we’d hear the trumpet sound
Of angels coming nearer!

3 O Jesus, come; we wait for Thee
With all the true and faithful!
Do not delay, but let us see
Thy reappearance graceful!
We shall rejoice to hear Thee say;
“Come, blessed Ones” and when we may
Thus unto Thee be carried.

4 Yes, Amen, come! Thy bride doth call
In spirit and with longing,
Until Thy face she may behold,
And rest upon Thy bosom.
Yea, earth and heaven doth resound
With echo sweet, in true hearts found,
A thousandfold, fond welcome.
