56. Piety Better Than Beauty

1 A pretty face is God's own gift,
The handsome form he too has made;
But beauty, like the sweetest rose,
Will yield its charms and surely fade.
And yet how num'rous is the host
Who for the body only care,
And in their folly do not seek
The robes of righteousness to wear.

2 If I have thus my soul abused,
That spark immortal God has giv'n,
I'll now no longer be unwise,
But turn my tho'ts to Christ and Heav'n.
I'll daily seek, by help divine,
My spirit to adorn with grace,
Which shall eternally outshine
The beauty of an an-gel's face.

3 O teachers, scholars, let us know
The frailty of the mortal part,
And that the charms of face and form
With fleeting time will soon depart.
And let us all the beauty seek
Of spotless purity of soul,
And in the glory-world we'll shine
While endless ages onward roll.
