Stone-Campbell Movement hymnal bibliography

John Wakefield, Hymn Society life member and retired Milligan College (Johnson City, TN) prof, has taken on the task for the hymnal bibliography committee of compiling the bibliography of all hymnals published in the Stone-Campbell Movement. This American movement fostered three church groups: a cappella churches of Christ, The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ (instrumental). Today the three groups have a total membership about

4.5 million. This movement, begun in the early 1800s, has spawned at least 1600 hymnals, song books, and chorus books. Hence, John's project has turned out to be much bigger than he anticipated. The project information includes date of publication; title, subtitle, number of pages or hymns, whether the publication is round notes, shape notes, or figure notes; publisher and city of publication; editorial committee; and libraries / archives in which the item can be found.

Anyone with additional information for John, who wants to give encouragement, or who would be interested in seeing his recent presentation "A Bibliography Speaks: Lessons for Worship in the Stone-Campbell Movement", can reach him at jcwakefield@milligan.edu.
