Alfred, King of England

Alfred the Great. (Wantage, Berkshire, England, 849-October 26, 901, Winchester). Youngest son of Aethelwulf, King of the West Saxons, and his first wife, Osburga, and successor to the throne in 871, following the reigns of this three older brothers. With his brothers and during his own reign he fought against the invading Danes and eventually became overlord of most of England, though not officially so. Codified the lows. Promoted a revival of learning, bringing many famous scholars to his kingdom and establishing a court school and libraries. He himself translated a number of theological works from Latin, adding his own thoughts and comments. A prose translation of the first fifty psalms into Anglo-Saxon is attributed to him.
