Henry Berger (sometimes Henri) was born in 1844 in Germany. He was an influential bandleader for the Royal Hawaiian Band. He arranged many European compositions for the band and composed Hawaiian music, including "Hawai'i Pono'i" which later became the Hawaiian national anthem, and then the state anthem.
