| Birth Year (est.): | 1557 |
| Death Year: | 1609 |
Giovanni Croce was born in Chioggia in about 1557. As a boy he entered the choir of St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice under the famed music theorist Gioseffo Zarlino. After taking orders in the early 1580s, he apparently served the church of Santa Maria Formosa, but maintained his association with St. Mark's where he eventually became maestro di cappella. He was best known for his secular canzonettas and madrigal comedies, but is also remembered for his church music for smaller choirs, perhaps written for Santa Maria Formosa.
