Gilbert James Ellis was born April 5, 1849, in Howard, Ohio. He attended Bethany College and began preaching in the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ in Ohio during the 1880s. In 1896 he co-edited The Praise Hymnal, a Collection of Hymns and Tunes with James H. Fillmore. Ellis died February 28, 1915 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
