Peter Piel was born near Bonn in 1835 and educated in the teachers' seminary at Kempen. He became professor of music at the Seminary of Boppard in 1868, where he worked until his death in 1904. As a composer, teacher, and critic he was influential in the reform of church music in Germany, and his Harmonielehre was long a standard text in church music study. His compositions include a large number of sacred vocal works and pieces for organ.
