Henry Smith Rees was the son of James Rees and Rebecca Smith, born November 23, 1827 in Jasper County, Georgia. He was a Baptist minister, as well as a singing teacher and active composer, with about 14 songs appearing in "The Sacred Harp" by B. F. White. He was ordained in 1853 and preached for nearly 70 years. In Baptist Biography Graham describes him as "one of the most useful Baptist preachers in Georgia." His twin brother John Palmer Rees was also a composer. He marrried Martha Jane Leavall in 1865. H. S. Rees died November 11, 1922 and is buried at the Tranquil Cemetery in Turin, Coweta County, Georgia.
