Frederick Hilborn Talbot was born in 1927 in British Guiana (present day Guyana). He was influenced by his uncle Reverend David Patterson Talbot. Bishop William R. Wilkes noticed Fred Talbot's leadership role in organizing the Wilkes Youth Choir and arranged a scholarship for Talbot to attend the AME's Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina. He was ordained an itinerant deacon in 1951 and an itinerant elder in 1953 and served churches in the Little Mountain Circuit in South Carolina. After earning his B.A. he enrolled in Yale Divinity School and served as pastor at the First Methodist Episcopal Church in New Haven. He received an M.Div in 1957 from Yale and a S.T.M. in 1959 from Pacific School of Religion. He taught at Shorter College in North Little Rock, Arkansas and Payne Theological Seminary in Wilburforce, Ohio. In 1972 he was elected the 90th Bishop of the AME Church, serving in many capacities. His books included God's fearless prophet: the story of Richard Allen and African American worship: new eyes for seeing, sacred poems and tunes. He also record a CD in two volumes: A bishop sings of his faith.
