Tupper, James, author of "Dark was the hour when Jesus bore" (Passiontide—Gethsemane), in the Baptist Psalmody, 1850, was an American barrister, member of the State legislature, and master in equity. He was born at Charlestown, South Carolina, Dec. 9, 1819, and died at Sommerville, South Carolina, Aug. 28, 1868.
