Baptized into Your Name Most Holy

Author: Johann J. Rambach, 1693-1735; Catherine Winkworth, 1829-78 Hymnal: Lutheran Worship #224 (1982) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Baptized into your name most holy, O Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, I claim a place, though weak and lowly, Among your seed, your chosen host. Buried with Christ and dead to sin, I have your Spirit now within. 2 My loving Father, here you take me Henceforth to be your child and heir; My faithful Savior, here you make me The fruit of all your sorrows share; O Holy Ghost, you comfort me Through threat'ning clouds around I see. 3 O faithful God, you never fail me; Your cov'nant surely will abide. Let not eternal death assail me Should I transgress it on my side! Have mercy when I come defiled; Forgive, lift up, restore your child. 4 All that I am and love most dearly, Receive it all, O Lord, from me. Oh, let me make my vows sincerely, And help me your own child to be! Let nothing that I am or own Serve any will but yours alone. By Grace I'm Saved

Author: Christian L. Scheidt, 1709-61 Hymnal: Lutheran Worship #351 (1982) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 First Line: By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless Lyrics: 1 By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless; My soul, believe and doubt it not. Why stagger at this word of promise? Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? No; then this word must true remain: By grace you too will life obtain. 2 By grace God's Son, our only Savior, Came down to earth to bear our sin. Was it because of your own merit That Jesus died your soul to win? No, it was grace, and grace alone, That brought him from his heav'nly throne. 3 By grace! This ground of faith is certain; So long as God is true, it stands. What saints have penned by inspiration, What in his Word our God commands, Our faith in what our God has done Depends on grace--grace through His Son. 4 By grace to timid hearts that tremble, In tribulation's furnace tried, By grace, in spite of fear and trouble, The Father's heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure If grace were not my anchor sure? 5 By grace! On this I'll rest when dying; In Jesus' promise I rejoice; For though I know my heart's condition, I also know my Savior's voice. My heart is glad, all grief has flown Since I am saved by grace alone. Topics: Justification Languages: English Tune Title: O DASS ICH TAUSEND ZUNGEN HÄTTE

Baptized into Thy Name Most Holy

Author: Catherine Winkworth; Johann J. Rambach Hymnal: The Lutheran Hymnal #298 (1941) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Baptized into Thy name most holy, O Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, I claim a place, though weak and lowly, Among Thy seed, Thy chosen host. Buried with Christ and dead to sin, Thy Spirit now shall live within. 2 My loving Father, Thou dost take me To be henceforth Thy child and heir; My faithful Savior, Thou dost make me The fruit of all Thy sorrows share; Thou, Holy Ghost, wilt comfort me When darkest clouds around I see. 3 And I have vowed to love and fear Thee And to obey Thee, Lord, alone; Because the Holy Ghost did move me, I dared to pledge myself Thine own, Renouncing sin to keep the faith And war with evil unto death. 4 My faithful God, Thou failest never, Thy cov'nant surely will abide; Oh, cast me not away forever Should I transgress it on my side! Tho' I have oft my soul defiled, Do Thou forgive, restore, Thy child. 5 Yea, all I am and love most dearly I offer now, O Lord, to Thee. Oh, let me make my vows sincerely And help me Thine own child to be! Let naught within me, naught I own, Serve any will but Thine alone. 6 And never let my purpose falter, O Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, But keep me faithful to Thine altar Till Thou shalt call me from my post. So unto Thee I live and die And praise Thee evermore on high. Amen. Topics: The Sacraments Baptism Scripture: Matthew 28:19 Languages: English Tune Title: O DASS ICH TAUSEND

By Grace I'm Saved, Grace Free and Boundless

Author: Christian L. Scheidt Hymnal: The Lutheran Hymnal #373 (1941) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless; My soul, believe and doubt it not. Why stagger at this word of promise? Hath Scripture ever falsehood taught? Nay; then this word must true remain; By grace thou, too, shalt heav'n obtain. 2 By grace! None dare lay claim to merit; Our works and conduct have no worth. God in His love sent our Redeemer, Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth; His death did for our sins atone, And we are saved by grace alone. 3 By grace! Oh, mark this word of promise When thou art by thy sins opprest, When Satan plagues thy troubled conscience, And when thy heart is seeking rest. What reason cannot comprehend God by His grace to thee doth send. 4 By grace God's Son, our only Savior, Came down to earth to bear our sin. Was it because of thine own merit That Jesus died thy soul to win? Nay, it was grace, and grace alone, That bro't Him from His heav'nly throne. 5 By grace! This ground of faith is certain; So long as God is true, it stands. What saints have penned by inspiration, What in His Word our God commands, What our whole faith must rest upon, Is grace alone, grace in His Son. 6 By grace to timid hearts that tremble, In tribulation's furnace tried-- By grace, despite all fear and trouble, The Father's heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure If grace were not my anchor sure? 7 By grace! On this I'll rest when dying; In Jesus' promise I rejoice; For though I know my heart's condition, I also know my Savior's voice. My heart is glad, all grief has flown, Since I am saved by grace alone. Amen. Topics: Faith and Justification Scripture: Ephesians 2:8-9 Languages: English Tune Title: O DASS ICH TAUSEND

O That I Had A Thousand Voices

Author: Catherine Winkworth; J. Mentzer Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #494 (1930) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 O that I had a thousand voices And with a thousand tongues could tell Of Him in whom the earth rejoices, Who all things wisely does and well! My grateful heart would then be free To tell what God has done for me. 2 O all ye pow'rs that He implanted, Arise, and silence keep no more; Ye senses all that He has granted, Awake, the Lord of hosts adore-- My soul and body, make ye meet, The Lord with hymns of praise to greet. 3 Ye forest leaves, so green and tender, That dance for joy in summer air; Ye meadow grasses, bright and slender, Ye flow'rs, so wondrous sweet and fair, That live to show His praise alone, Help me to make His glory known. 4 Ye creatures that have breath and motion, That fill with life, earth, sea and sky, O join me in my heart's devotion, As I exalt the Lord most high: My utmost pow'rs can ne'er aright Declare the wonders of His might. 5 But I will tell, while I am living, His tenderness with every breath And come before Him with thanksgiving Until my heart is still in death: Nay, when at last my lips grow cold, His praise shall in my sighs be told. 6 O Father, deign Thou, I beseech Thee, To listen to my earthly lays; A nobler strain in heaven shall reach Thee When I with angels hymn Thy praise And learn amid their choirs to sing Loud hallelujahs to my King.
