Wake, Awake, For Night Is Flying

Author: Philip Nicolai Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home #244 (1927) Meter: 8.9.8.9.8.9.8.6.6.4.4.4.8 Topics: Comfort and Hope Lyrics: 1 Wake, awake, for night is flying: The watchmen on the heights are crying, Awake, Jerusalem arise! Midnight's solemn hour is tolling, His chariot wheels are nearer rolling; He comes, prepare, ye virgins wise. Rise up; with willing feet Go forth, the Bridegroom meet; Hallelujah! Bear thro' the night your well trimm'd light, Speed forth to join the marriage rite. 2 Zion hears the watchmen singing, Her heart with deep delight is springing, At once she wakes, she hastes away: Forth her Bridegroom hastens glorious, In grace arrayed, by truth victorious; Her grief is joy, her night is day: All hail, incarnate Lord, Our crown, and our reward! Hallelujah! We haste along, in pomp of song, And gladsome join the marriage throng. 3 Hear Thy praise, O Lord, ascending From tongues of men and angels, blending With harp and lute and psaltery. By Thy pearly gates in wonder We stand, and swell the voice of thunder, In bursts of choral melody: No vision ever brought, No ear hath ever caught, Such bliss and joy: We raise the song, we swell the throng, To praise Thee ages all along. Languages: English Tune Title: [Wake, awake, for night is flying]

Like Thousand Mountains Brightly Crowned

Author: H. A. Brorson Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home #245 (1927) Topics: Comfort and Hope Lyrics: 1 Like thousand mountains brightly crowned, With groves of swaying palms around, We see a throng of ev'ry tongue In snow-white mantles gowned. These are the heroes who did go Thro' pains and trials here below. The Lamb of God has with His blood Their robes made white as snow. In heaven now His face they see In never-ending jubilee Where angels sing Before the King The sweetest symphony. 2 Their earthly lot was shame and scorn, But now behold them bright as morn, In priestly gowns, with golden crowns, And glory heaven-born. The world did often them dismay And tears would flow by night and day, But God by grace in His embrace Has wiped all tears away. And now they find where life is best Eternal joy with hearts at rest; The Lamb so dear At fountains clear In Host as well as Guest. 3 Now, hail to you, bright heroes bold, The saints just gone, the saints of old, That unto death ye kept the faith And passed away consoled! Ye counted earthly pleasures cheap, With tears ye sowed and now ye reap The golden grain and see your gain With gladness strong and deep. Lift up your voice and wave your palms, Yea, fill all heaven with your psalms: "All honor be Eternally To God and to the Lamb!" I Love, And I Know The Span Of My Years

Author: B. S. Ingemann Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home #247 (1927) Meter: 10.9.11.10.9 Topics: Comfort and Hope First Line: I live, and I know the span of my years Lyrics: 1 I Live, and I know the span of my years: I live until Jesus me calleth. I live as a guest in this valley of tears, I live till the beckoning hand appears For which the last barrier falleth. 2 I die, and I know what hour it will be; I die at the hour of His pleasure. I die, and mine eyes my perfection shall see, I die, and my soul from its clay is free And soars to its heavenly treasure. 3 I journey and know just whither I'm bound; I'm bound for the kingdom of heaven. I go where the house of my Father is found, Where jubilant voices with praises sound, And joys to His children are given. 4 I lead now a blessed life in my Lord, I die but to live with Him ever. I journey with faith in my Savior's word, I carry His helmet and Spirit's sword Until He my life-thread shall sever. Languages: English Tune Title: [I live, and I know the span of my years]

Who Knows How Soon My Days Are Ended

Author: Amilia Juliana, Countess of Schwartzburg Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home #248 (1927) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Topics: Comfort and Hope Lyrics: 1 Who knows how soon my days are ended? My years are few, and time speeds on. How swiftly, in this world of changes, May death approach and life be gone! My God, for Jesus' sake I pray That I in peace may pass away. 2 So teach me, Lord, my days to number That when the hour of death appears, The wounds of Christ may be my refuge, Nor may I spare repentant tears. My God, for Jesus' sake I pray That I in peace may pass away. 3 Help me to put my house in order That I may ever ready be To leave this world, and say in meekness: Lord, deal Thou as Thou wilt with me. My God, for Jesus' sake I pray That I in peace may pass away. 4 O Father, let my sins be covered With Jesus' blood and righteousness; By faith this spotless garment wearing, I rest shall find from all distress. My God, for Jesus' sake I pray That I in peace may pass away. 5 From Jesus naught my soul can sever, Nor life nor death shall do me harm; Him as my Lord and God confessing, I easily my foes disarm. My God, for Jesus' sake I pray That I in peace may pass away. 6 With Him I live in sweet contentment, And death instills no thought of fear; For, while to Thee my ways commending, I have this faith to lend me cheer: Thy grace in Christ shall be my stay, And I in peace shall pass away. Some Day I Know

Author: A. Wexels Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home #249 (1927) Meter: 11.10.11.10 Topics: Comfort and Hope First Line: Some day, I know, the mist that life is veiling Lyrics: 1 Some day, I know, the mist that life is veiling Shall roll away and darkness disappear Before the day with radiance never failing On which my path shall lie before me clear. 2 Some day, I know, all mysteries perplexing Which here I never quite could understand, With all my problems yet unsolved and vexing, Shall be revealed, and I shall see God's hand. 3 Some day, I know, all sorrow shall have vanished, All wounds be healed and ev'ry want supplied. All tears shall cease, all sighs for aye be banished; In love's embrace all unrest shall subside. 4 Some day, I know, I shall appear before Him Whom here I hold in love's and faith's embrace, Shall humbly kneel and gratefully adore Him, And with mine eyes behold Him face to face. 5 Some day, I know, for sin no longer slaving, Each tho't and word and deed unstained and pure, I shall not even fear a sinful craving My purity and bliss might e'er obscure. 6 Some day, I know, in yonder realms of glory, I and the friend I found while on the way Shall speak of that new life and tell the story Of this old life, dimmed like a dream by day. 7 My Savior, give my heart this sweet conviction Each time the way seems long and full of pain, That it may lighten ev'ry deep affliction And cause a smile to shine through tears again.
