I cannot tell

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #303 (2000) Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Topics: Year A Lent 3 First Line: I cannot tell how he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell how he whom angels worship should stoop to love the peoples of the earth, or why as shepherd he should seek the wand'rer with his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, ev'ry storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when ev'ry heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n and heav'n to earth, will answer: 'At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' O Jesus, I have promised

Author: J. E. Bode (1816-1874) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #531 (1987) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: Lent 3, The King and the Kingdom Suffering Lyrics: 1 O Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end — be now and ever near me, my Master and my Friend: I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side, nor wander from the pathway if you will be my guide. 2 O let me feel you near me, the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but Jesus, draw still nearer and shield my soul from sin! 3 O let me hear you speaking in accents clear and still; above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will: O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; and speak to make me listen, O Guardian of my soul. 4 O let me see your footmarks and in them place my own; my hope to follow truly is in your strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my Friend. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

Author: Isaac Watts; Pauline Martin Hymnal: Voices United #149 (1996) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Lent 3 Year B First Line: When I survey the wondrous cross (Quand je me tourne vers la croix) Lyrics: 1 When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. 2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God: all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. 3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? 4 Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small: love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. Languages: English Tune Title: COMMUNION (ROCKINGHAM)

Put thou thy trust in God

Author: Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676; John Wesley, 1703-1791 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #576 (2000) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Year C Lent 3 Lyrics: 1 Put thou thy trust in God, in duty's path go on; walk in his strength with faith and hope, so shall thy work be done. 2 Commit thy ways to him, thy works into his hands, and rest on his unchanging word, who heav'n and earth commands. 3 Though years on years roll on, his cov'nant shall endure; though clouds and darkness hide his path, the promised grace is sure. 4 Give to the winds thy fears; hope, and be undismayed: God hears thy sighs and counts thy tears; God shall lift up thy head. 5 Through waves and clouds and storms his pow'r will clear thy way: wait thou his time; the darkest night shall end in brightest day. 6 Leave to his sov'reign sway to choose and to command; so shalt thou, wond'ring, own his way, how wise, how strong his hand. God of Grace and God of Glory

Author: Harry Emerson Fosdick Hymnal: Voices United #686 (1996) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Topics: Lent 3 Year A; Lent 3 Year B Lyrics: 1 God of grace and God of glory, on your people pour your power; now fulfil your church’s story; bring its bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour. 2 Lo, the hosts of evil round us scorn your Christ, assail your ways; fears and doubts too long have bound us; free our hearts to work and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days. 3 Cure your children’s warring madness, bend our pride to your control; shame our wanton selfish gladness, rich in goods and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss your kingdom's goal. 4 Set our feet on lofty places; gird our lives that they may be armoured with all Christ-like graces, pledged to set all captives free. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, that we fail not them nor thee. Languages: English Tune Title: RHUDDLAN

In the Cross of Christ I Glory

Author: John Bowring, 1792-1872 Hymnal: Lutheran Book of Worship #104 (1978) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Topics: Lent 3 Lyrics: 1 In the cross of Christ I glory, Tow'ring o'er the wrecks of time. All the light of sacred story Gathers round its head sublime. 2 When the woes of life o'ertake me, Hopes deceive, and fears annoy, Never shall the cross forsake me; Lo, it glows with peace and joy. 3 When the sun of bliss is beaming Light and love upon my way, From the cross the radiance streaming Adds more luster to the day. 4 Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, By the cross are sanctified; Peace is there that knows no measure, Joys that through all time abide.
