Your hand, O God, has guided

Author: E. H. Plumptre (1821-1891) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #536 (1987) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: Pentecost 9 The Whole Armour of God Lyrics: 1 Your hand, O God, has guided your flock, from age to age; the faithfulness is written on history's every page. They knew your perfect goodness, whose deeds we now record; and both to this bear witness: one church, one faith, one Lord. 2 Your heralds brought the gospel to greatest as to least; they summoned all to hasten and share the great king's feast. And this was all their teaching in every deed and word; to all alike proclaiming: one church, one faith, one Lord. 3 Through many days of darkness, through many scenes of strife, the faithful few fought bravely to guard the nation's life. Their gospel of redemption — sin pardoned, life restored — was all in this enfolded: one church, one faith, one Lord. 4 And we, shall we be faithless? shall hearts fail, hands hang down? shall we evade the conflict and throw away the crown? Not so! In God's deep counsels some better thing is stored; we will maintain, unflinching, one church, one faith, one Lord. 5 Your mercy will not fail us nor leave your work undone; with your right hand to help us, the victory shall be won. And then by earth and heaven your name shall be adored; and this shall be their anthem: one church, one faith, one Lord. Scripture: Ephesians 4:4-5 Languages: English Tune Title: THORNBURY

Fight the good fight with all your might

Author: J. S. B. Monsell (1811-1875) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #526a (1987) Topics: Pentecost 9 The Whole Armour of God Lyrics: 1 Fight the good fight with all your might, Christ is your strength, and Christ your right; lay hold on life, and it shall be your joy and crown eternally. 2 Run the straight race through God's good grace, lift up your eyes, and seek his face: life with its way before you lies, Christ is the path, and Christ the prize. 3 Cast care aside, lean on your guide, his boundless mercy will provide; trust, and your trusting soul shall prove Christ is its life, and Christ its love. 4 Faint not, nor fear, his arms are near; he does not change, and you are dear; only believe and Christ shall be your all-in-all eternally. God is our strength and refuge

Author: Richard Bewes (born 1934) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #527 (1987) Meter: 7.7.7.5.7.7.11 Topics: Pentecost 9 The Whole Armour of God Lyrics: 1 God is our strength and refuge, our present help in trouble; and we therefore will not fear, though the earth should change! Though mountains shake and tremble, though swirling floods are raging, God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore! 2 There is a flowing river, within God's holy city; God is in the midst of her — she shall not be moved! God's help is swiftly given, thrones vanish at his presence — God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore! 3 Come, see the works of our maker, learn of his deeds all powerful: wars will cease across the world when he shatters the spear! Be still and know your creator, uplift him in the nations — God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore! Scripture: Psalm 46 Languages: English Tune Title: DAM BUSTERS MARCH

O Jesus, I have promised

Author: J. E. Bode (1816-1874) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #531 (1987) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: Pentecost 9 The Whole Armour of God Lyrics: 1 O Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end — be now and ever near me, my Master and my Friend: I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side, nor wander from the pathway if you will be my guide. 2 O let me feel you near me, the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but Jesus, draw still nearer and shield my soul from sin! 3 O let me hear you speaking in accents clear and still; above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will: O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; and speak to make me listen, O Guardian of my soul. 4 O let me see your footmarks and in them place my own; my hope to follow truly is in your strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my Friend. I Worship You, O LORD

Author: James E. Seddon; Calvin Seerveld Hymnal: Psalms for All Seasons #30A (2012) Meter: 6.6.6.6.6.6 Topics: Year C, Ordinary Time after Pentecost, July 3-9 Lyrics: 1 I worship you, O LORD, for you have raised me up; I cried to you for help, and you restored my life. You brought me back from death and saved me from the grave. 2 Sing praises to the LORD, all those who know his name; for while his wrath is brief, his favor knows no end. Though tears flow for a night, the morning brings new joy. 3 I said, "I am so strong, I never shall be moved"; but you, LORD, shook my life-- my heart was in distress. I cried out for your help and pleaded for your grace: 4 "What good am I when dead, while lying in the grave? Can dust recount your love, the grave proclaim your praise? O hear me, gracious LORD, in mercy be my aid!" 5 My mourning you have turned to dancing and to joy; my sadness you dispelled as gladness filled my soul. And so I'll sing your praise, my God, through all my days. Scripture: Psalm 30 Tune Title: BISHOP TUCKER
