The Lord hath spoke, the mighty God

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #L (1767) Topics: Description of Slander and Backbiting Lyrics: 1 The Lord hath spoke, the mighty GOD Hath sent his Summons all abroad, From dawning Light, till Day declines; The list'ning Earth his Voice has heard, And he from Sion hath appear'd, Where Beauty in Perfection shines. 2 Our GOD shall come, and keep no more Misconstru'd Silence as before; But wasting Flames before him send: Around shall Tempests fiercely rage, While he does Heaven and Earth engage, His just Tribunal to attend. 3 "Assemble all my Saints to me, (Thus runs the great divine Decree,} "That in my lasting Cov'nant live; "And Off'rings bring with constant Care." The Heav'n's his Justice shall declare, For GOD himself shall Sentence give. 4 Attend my People, Israel hear, Thy strong Accuser I'll appear; Thy GOD, thy only GOD, am I, 'Tis not of Off'rings I complain, Which, daily in my Temple slain, My sacred Altar did supply. 5 Will this alone Atonement make? No Bullocks from thy Stall I'll take, Nor He-Goat from thy Fold accept: The Forest Beasts that range alone, The Cattle too are all my own, That on a thousand Hills are kept. 6 I know the Fowls that build their Nests, In craggy Rocks; and Savage Beasts, That loosely haunt the open Fields: If seiz'd with Hunger, I could be, I need not seek Relief from thee; Since the World's mine, and all it yields. 7 Think'st thou, that I have any need On slaughter'd Bulls and Goats to feed, To eat their Flesh and drink their Blood? The Sacrifices I require, Are Hearts which Love and Zeal inspire, And Vows with strictest Care made good. 8 In Times of Trouble, call on me, And I will set thee safe and free; And thou Returns of Praise shall make; But to the Wicked, thus saith GOD, How dar'st thou teach my Laws abroad, Or in thy Mouth my Cov'nant take? 9 For stubborn thou, confirm'd in Sin, Hast Proof against Instruction been, And of my Word didst lightly speak: When thou a subtle Thief did'st see, Thou gladly did'st with him agree, And with Adult'rers didst partake. 10 Vile Slander is thy chief Delight; Thy Tongue, by Envy mov'd and Spite, Deceitful Tales does hourly spread; Thou dost with hateful Scandals wound, Thy Brother, and with Lies confound, The Offspring of thy Mother's Bed. 11 These Things didst thou, whom still I strove To gain, with Silence, and with Love; 'Till thou did'st wickedly surmise, That I was such a one as thou; But I'll reprove and shame thee now, And set thy Sins before thy Eyes. 12 Mark this, ye wicked Fools, lest I Let all my Bolts of Vengeance fly, Whilst none shall dare your Cause to own. Who praises me, due Honour gives; And to the Man that justly lives, My strong Salvation shall be shown. Scripture: Psalm 50 Languages: English Tune Title: [The Lord hath spoke, the mighty God]

My Heart rejoices in thy Name

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P31b (1766) Topics: Deliverance from slander Lyrics: 1 My Heart rejoices in thy Name, My GOD, my Help, my Trust; Thou hast preserv'd my Face from Shame, Mine Honour from the Dust. 2 "My Life is spent with Grief, I cry'd, "My Years consum'd in Groans, "My Strength decays, mine Eyes are dry'd, "And Sorrow wastes my Bones." 3 Among mine Enemies my Name Was a mere Proverb grown, While to my Neighbours I became Forgotten and unknown. 4 Slander and Fear on every Side Seiz'd and beset me round, I to the Throne of Grace apply'd, And speedy Rescue found. Pause. 5 How great Deliv'rance thou hast wrought Before the Sons of Men! The lying Lips to Silence brought, And made their Boastings vain! 6 Thy Children from the Strife of Tongues Shall thy Pavilion hide; Guard them from Infamy and Wrongs, And crush the Sons of Pride. 7 Within thy secret Presence, Lord, Let me for ever dwell; No fenced City, wall'd and barr'd, Secures a Saint so well. Scripture: Psalm 31:7-21 Languages: English

A Penitent pleading for Pardon

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #93 (1786) Topics: Deliverance from slander; Deliverance from slander First Line: Shew pity, Lord, O Lord, forgive Lyrics: 1 Shew pity, Lord, O Lord, forgive, Let a repenting rebel live; Are not thy mercies large and free? May not a sinner trust in thee? 2 My crimes are great, but can't surpass The power and glory of thy grace: Great God, thy nature hath no bound, So let thy pardoning love be found? 3 Oh wash my soul from every sin, And make my guilty conscience clean; Here on my heart the burden lies, And past offenses pain mine eyes. 4 My lips with shame my sins confess Against thy law, against thy grace; Lord, should thy judgment grow severe, I am condemn'd, but thou art clear. 5 Should sudden vengeance seize my breath, I must pronounce thee just in death; And if my soul were sent to hell, Thy righteous law approves it well. 6 Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord, Whose hope, still hovering round thy word, Would light on some sweet promise there, Some sure support against despair. Original and actual Sin confessed

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #94a (1786) Topics: Deliverance from slander; Deliverance from slander First Line: Lord, I am vile, conceiv'd in sin Lyrics: 1 Lord, I am vile, conceiv'd in sin, And born unholy and unclean; Sprung from the man whose guilty fall Corrupts the race, and taints us all. 2 Soon as we draw our infant breath, The seeds of sin grow up for death; Thy law demands a perfect heart; But we're defil'd in every part. 3 [Great God, create my heart a-new, And form my spirit pure and true; Oh make me wise betimes to spy My danger and my remedy.] 4 Behold I fall before thy face; My only refuge is thy grace; No outward forms can make me clean; The leprosy lies deep within. 5 No bleeding bird, nor bleeding beast, Nor hyssop-branch, nor sprinkling priest, Nor running brook, nor flood, nor sea, Can wash the dismal stain away. 6 Jesus, my God, thy blood alone Hath power sufficient to attone; Thy blood can make me white as snow; No Jewish types could cleanse me so. 7 While guilt disturbs and breaks my peace, Nor flesh nor soul hath rest or ease; Lord, let me hear thy pardoning voice, And make my broken heart rejoice.
