I Am the Bread, the Bread of Life

Author: Brian R. Hoare (1935-) Meter: Irregular Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Vine Lyrics: 1 I am the bread, the bread of Life; who comes to me will never hunger. I am the bread, the bread of heaven; who feeds on me will never die. And as you eat, remember me, my body broken on the tree: my life was given to set you free, and I'm alive for evermore. 2 I am the vine, the living vine; apart from me you can do nothing. I am the vine, the real vine: abide in me and I in you. And as you drink, remember me, my blood was shed upon the tree: my life was given to set you free, and I'm alive for evermore. 3 So eat this bread and drink this wine, and as you do, receive this life of mine. All that I am, I give to you, that you may live for evermore. Scripture: Matthew 26:26-29 Used With Tune: PICKET WOOD

Vine and the branches

Author: Toplady Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 30 hymnals Topics: Characters and Representations of Christ Vine; Christ Vine First Line: Jesus, immutably the same Lyrics: 1 Jesus, immutably the same, Thou true and living vine, Around thy all-supporting stem My feeble arms I twine. 2 Quicken'd by thee, and kept alive, I flourish and bear fruit: My life I from thy sap derive, My vigor from thy root. 3 I can do nothing without thee; My strength is wholly thine; Wither'd and barren should I be, If sever'd from the vine. 4 Upon my leaf, when parch'd with heat, Refreshing dew shall drop, The plant which thy right hand hath set, Shall ne'er be rooted up. 5 Each moment water'd by thy care, And fenc'd with power divine, Fruit to eternal life shall bear The feeblest branch of thine. Scripture: John 15:1-5

Thou who art enthroned in glory

Author: Mrs. Lydia Jane Pierson Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Church A Vine Lyrics: 1 Thou who art enthroned in glory, Crowned with love and robed in grace, Lo! we humbly bow before Thee, Offering up our songs of praise. Mighty God and gracious Saviour! Spirit of enduring grace, Come in Thine especial favor, With Thy glory fill this place. 2 We would celebrate the changes Which the passing years have made, Since our fathers—poor and strangers— Sought the Western forest’s shade. From Helvetia’s vine-clad mountains Came a little friendless band; By the rich Rhine’s infant fountains, Others left their fatherland. 3 Here the little vine, increasing, Spread its branches green and fair; Now by Thine especial blessing See how wide Thy vineyards are. Come and take the ripened cluster; All the vintage, Lord, is Thine; But let mercy temper justice, Where Thou meet’st a fruitless vine. 4 Let our institutions flourish, Sending forth a pious band, With the words of life to nourish All who hunger through the land. Zion spreads her hands before Thee; Come, and in her temples reign, While we give all praise and glory To the Triune God, Amen. Used With Tune: GUIDANCE
