You that know the Lord is gracious

Author: Cyril A. Alington, 1872-1955 Hymnal: The Book of Praise #470 (1997) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Jesus Christ Cornerstone / Foundation Lyrics: 1 Ye that know the Lord is gracious, ye for whom a corner-stone stands, of God elect and precious, laid that ye may build thereon, see that on that sure foundation you a living temple raise, towers that may tell forth salvation, walls that may re-echo praise. 2 Living stones, by God appointed each to his allotted place, royal priests, by God anointed, will you not declare God's grace? Now a royal generation, tell the tidings of your birth, tidings of a new creation to an old and weary earth. 3 Tell the praise of God who called you out of darkness into light, broke the fetters that enthralled you, gave you freedom, peace and sight. Tell the tale of sins forgiven, strength renewed and hope restored, till the earth, in tune with heaven, praise and magnify the Lord. Join we with the saints of old, no more strangers in the fold, one the Shepherd who us sought, one the flock his blood has bought. 2 One our Master, one alone, none but Christ as Lord we own; "brethren of his law" are we — “As I loved you, so love ye.” Branches we in Christ, the Vine, living by his life divine; as the Father with the Son, so, in Christ, we all are one. 3 One the name in which we pray, one our Savior day by day; with one cup and with one bread thus one cov'nant way we tread. One in spirit, one in life, one amid earth’s frequent strife, one in faith and one in love, one in hope of heav'n above. Scripture: John 10:16 Languages: English Tune Title: GAUDEAMUS PARITER

God is the refuge of His saints

Author: Dr. Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #536 (1917) Topics: Foundation Promises a Lyrics: 1 God is the refuge of His saints, When storms of sharp distress invade; Ere we can offer our complaints, Behold Him present with His aid! 2 Let mountains from their seats be hurled Down to the deep, and buried there, Convulsions shake the solid world, Our faith shall never yield to fear. 3 Loud may the troubled ocean roar; In sacred peace our souls abide; While every nation, every shore, Trembles, and dreads the swelling tide. 4 There is a stream, whose gentle flow Supplies the city of our God; Life, love, and joy still gliding through, And watering our divine abode. 5 That sacred stream, Thy living word, Thus all our anxious fear controls; Sweet peace Thy promises afford, And give new strength to fainting souls. 6 Zion enjoys her Monarch's love, Secure against the threatening hour; Nor can her firm foundation move, Built on His faithfulness and power. They did not build in vain

Author: Alan Luff, 1928- Hymnal: The Book of Praise #616 (1997) Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Topics: Jesus Christ Cornerstone / Foundation Lyrics: 1 They did not build in vain who founded here a church as witness to God's love amid a world of pain, for still, to those who wish to see this place proclaims God's mystery. 2 They built upon the rock that is the risen Lord, the one foundation laid which stands each earthly shock; that, Spirit filled, we here might raise, as living temples, prayer and praise. 3 Those who have loved this place, a cloud of witnesses, surround and urge us on as we now run our race, and so we lay aside each sin in our desire to strive and win. 4 Though the horizon's bend conceals the way ahead, the footprints on the road show Christ waits at the end; in him alone our faith shall stand who waits for us at God's right hand. 5 Here is our meeting place where doubt finds grounds of faith, where hurt finds healing love, our penitence your grace; where bridging time to eternity is God the holy Trinity. But, Lord, Thy Church is praying yet, A thousand years the same. 2 We mark her goodly battlements, And her foundations strong; We hear within the solemn voice Of her unending song. 3 For not like kingdoms of the world Thy holy Church, O God! Though earthquake shocks are threatening her, And tempests are abroad; 4 Unshaken as eternal hills, Immovable she stands, A mountain that shall fill the earth, A house not made by hands. Amen. Psalm 118 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.258 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Christ the church's foundation First Line: The Lord appears my helper now Lyrics: The Lord appears my helper now, Nor is my faith afraid What all the sons of earth can do, Since heav'n affords its aid. 'Tis safer, Lord, to hope in thee, And have my God my friend, Than trust in men of high degree, And on their truth depend. Like bees, my foes beset me round, A large and angry swarm; But I shall all their rage confound By thine almighty arm. 'Tis through the Lord my heart is strong, In him my lips rejoice; While his salvation is my song, How cheerful is my voice! Like angry bees, they girt me round; When God appears they fly; So burning thorns, with crackling sound, Make a fierce blaze and die. Joy to the saints and peace belongs; The Lord protects their days: Let Isr'el tune immortal songs To his almighty grace. Scripture: Psalm 118:6-15 Languages: English

Thy praise, more constant than before, Shall fill his daily breath; Thy hand, that hath chastised him sore, Defends him still from death. Open the gates of Zion now, For we shall worship there; The house where all the righteous go Thy mercy to declare. Among th' assemblies of thy saints Our thankful voice we raise; There we have told thee our complaints, And there we speak thy praise. Scripture: Psalm 118:17-21 Languages: English
