In Sion's sacred fane the joyous lay

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 65 Lyrics: 1 In Sion's sacred fane the joyous lay Thy name attends; thy favour'd people pay The votive offering, Lord; the hallow'd blood Flows round thy altar in a purple flood. 2 Propitious, thou our faithful vows dost hear; To thee shall fly the sons of men in pray'r. 3 Thy punishments for sin afflict me sore; Cleanse me, my God, and they shall wound no more. 4 Blest is the man, whom thou shalt chuse a friend, And in thy sacred temple bid attend! O glorious lot! O heavenly employ! Thy sacred temple fills his soul with joy. 5 The nations tremble with a dread dismay, When thou thy righteous judgments dost display; When fall thy terrors on the impious proud, When crown thy bright rewards the humbly good. 6 Great is thy pow'r--when shatter'd by the storm, Thou bid'st the mountain on her base stand firm. 7 By winds disturb'd, thou still'st the roaring sea, And dost the tumults of the world allay. 8 Thy thunder rolls, thy rapid lightnings glare; The hearts of all are sunk in awful fear: Thy sun breaks forth, and gives to nature birth; Owns thy beneficence the quicken'd earth: 9 Thou pour'st thy waters on the thirsty soil; The fatten'd lands reward the ploughman's toil: With fruitful show'rs revived thou the fields, And the rich glebe it's golden produce yields: 10 Falls on the stubborn earth thy pearly dew; The plains in all their verdant pride we view: 11 Or on the ridgey hills, or in the vales, The glad'ning influence of thy pow'r prevails; 12 Gaily the herds along thy pastures rove; Climb the steep cliff, or range the leafy grove; Where'er they range, fair herbs and flow'rs abound; Rich affluence covers the enamel'd ground; Their God, the hills, the plains, the vallies sing, And bless the bounties of their heav'nly king.

You speak, and mighty mountains stand

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 65 Lyrics: You speak, and mighty mountains stand, God of eternal power! The sea grows calm at your command, and tempests cease to roar. The morning light and evening shade successive comforts bring; your plenteous fruits make harvest glad, and flowers adorn the spring. Seasons and times, and moons and hours, heaven, earth, and air are free; the clouds distill in fruitful showers, and all your world will see that thirsty lands can drink their fill, and fields of corn appear; your ways abound with blessings still; your goodness crowns the year. Used With Tune: MOUNTAINS Text Sources: Psalm 65, 2nd Part, alt.

Psalm LXV

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 65 First Line: Before thy throne, O God of grace Lyrics: I. Before thy throne, O God of grace, Thy Sion would her vows perform; Her ardent vows in deep distress— O be her grateful praise as warm. II. O thou who hear'st our humble cry, Our God, our refuge and our stay; To thee, shall mourning sinners fly, To thee, shall ev'ry nation pray. III. Tho' sin prevails with dreadful sway, And hope almost expiring lies, Thy grace shall purge our sins away, And bid our dying hopes arise. IV. Happy the man approv'd by thee, Near to his God, thy chosen care; Thy constant goodness he shall see, The bounties of thy table share. V. Whene'er thy injur'd people's cries Ascend before thy awful throne, All dreadful bright thy terrors rise, And make thy grace and justice known. VI. Thou art the confidence and stay Of the wide earth's remotest ends; And those who try the dang'rous sea, On thee their hope, their all depends. VII. Thy awful word, with potent found Firm bade the solid mountains stand; Thy pow'r encircles nature round; All nature rests upon thy hand. VIII. That word which stills the raging seas, When the loud waves tempestuous roar, Commands the warring world to peace; And noise and tumult are no more. IX. Thy dreadful signs display'd abroad, Fill trembling nations with surprize; The trembling nations own the God, And lift their supplicating eyes. X. The rising morn, the closing day, Repeat thy praise with grateful voice; Each in their turns thy pow'r display, And laden with thy gifts rejoice. XI. Earth's wide-extended varying scenes, All smiling round thy bounty show; From seas or clouds, full magazines, Thy rich diffusive blessings flow. XII. Now earth receives the precious seed, Which thy indulgent hand prepares; And nourishes the future bread, And answers all the sower's cares. XIII. Thy sweet refreshing show'rs attend, And thro' the ridges gently flow, Soft on the springing corn descend; And thy kind blessing makes it grow. XIV. Thy goodness crowns the circling year, Thy paths drop fatness all around; Ev'n barren wilds thy praise declare, And echoing hills return the sound. XV. Here spreading flocks adorn the plain, There plenty ev'ry charm displays; Thy bounty cloaths each lovely scene, And joyful nature shouts thy praise.
