When God all-clement heard his people's cries

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 126 Lyrics: 1 When God all-clement heard his people's cries, And freed them from their galling miseries; When he redeem'd them with his mighty hand, And safe-restor'd them to their native land; 'Twixt hope and fear distracted, long they seem Like men awaking from an irksome dream; 2 Then were their sorrows into laughter turn'd; They then rejoic'd as much as late they mourn'd; Dried were their tears--'twas all one scene of joy; While hymn's of gratitude their tongues employ, Nor less astonish'd at the great event The heathen were, and murmur'd discontent: What wonders hath their God perform'd? they cry; 3 Wonders indeed! we therefore shout for joy. 4 And thou our brethren, gracious God, restore; In their hard bondage let them sigh no more; Let them return, and fill the crouded road; As, when the south-wind blows, the rapid flood Disdains confinement, and breaks down it's mounds, And the whole plain in one wide deluge drowns. 5 Who trusts his grain unto a barren soil, Anxious he fears, 'twill not repay his toil; But if glad rains a plenteous crop produce, What sudden transports o'er his soul diffuse? 6 So we, from exile happily return'd, Where long our fetters and our woes we 'ad mourn'd; Reseated in our native fields, are gay, And our deliv'rer's clemency display' Ourselves to life, to liberty, restor'd, We, raptur'd, sing the mercies of our Lord.

The great design if not Jehovah bless

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 126 Lyrics: 1 The great design if not Jehovah bless, Vainly we scheme the lofty dome to raise; Nor wakeful guards the city can secure, If not protected by Almighty pow'r. 2 If heav'n not man in all his toil sustain, He rises early to his work in vain, In vain he to his rest does late repair, And eat the bread of weariness and care. But heav'n your friend, your schemes have sure success, Prosp'rous your labours, and you sleep in peace. 3 He show'rs eternal blessings on your head, Crowns with a num'rous race the genial bed: With infant prate, diverting cares away, Around your board the dear-lov'd striplings play. 4 And Oh! what nobler blessings can afford To his lov'd servants our indulgent Lord? The warrior boasts not in the dusty field So sure a buckler, nor so firm a shield. 5 Happy the man, whose sons defend his life! They're arms, that fail not in the day of strife; Afore the judge when cited to appear, He'll not his wily adversary fear.

For Remembered Music Sounding

Author: Thomas H. Troeger, 1945- Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 126 Lyrics: 1 For remembered music sounding when the last note fades away and our hearts are left abounding with new confidence to pray, for the preludes that recenter each distracted, fussing soul so the peace of God may enter and restore and make us whole, 2 for the hymns of adoration that unite us in one voice as we join the whole creation and together we rejoice, for laments and psalms of sorrow that release our needed tears and that help us reach tomorrow and to look beyond our fears, 3 for the carols waking wonder at the birth of Christ our Lord, for a tombstone split asunder by an alleluia chord, for the Spirit's sudden coming when an anthem lifts our heart, for the angels we hear humming while we play or sing our part, 4 for the beauty, for the glory, for the church alive with praise, for the singing of the story that redeems our silent days— God, our thanks are never ending while our spirits pray and long to create, as you're intending, that new world we glimpse through song. Topics: Beauty; Centering; Christmas; Church; Commitment; Easter; Lament; Music; Pentecost; Praise; Prayer; Shalom; Thanksgiving; Welcome; Yearning Used With Tune: SENTENCE
