Hear my prayer, O Heavenly Father

Appears in 77 hymnals Topics: Evening Hymns in general Lyrics: 1 Hear my prayer, O heavenly Father, Ere I lay me down to sleep; Bid Thy angels, pure and holy, Round my bed their vigil keep. 2 Great my sins are, but Thy mercy Far outweighs them ev'ry one; Down before Thy cross I cast them, Trusting in Thy help alone. 3 Keep me, through this night of peril, Underneath its boundless shade; Take me to Thy rest, I pray Thee, When my pilgrimage is made! 4 None shall measure out Thy patience By the span of human thought; None shall bound the tender mercies Which Thy holy Son hath wrought. 5 Pardon all my past transgressions; Give me strength for days to come;, Guide and guard me with Thy blessing, Till Thine angels bid me home!

Great God! to Thee my evening song

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 286 hymnals Topics: Evening Hymns in general Lyrics: 1 Great God! to Thee my evening song, With humble gratitude I raise: Oh, let Thy mercy tune my tongue, And fill my heart with lively praise. 2 My days, unclouded as they pass, And ev'ry gently rolling hour, Are monuments of wondrous grace, And witness to Thy love and power. 3 And yet this thoughtless, wretched heart, Too oft regardless of Thy love, Ungrateful, can from Thee depart, And from the path of duty rove. 4 Seal my forgiveness in the blood Of Christ, my Lord; His Name alone I plead for pardon, gracious God, And kind acceptance at Thy throne. 5 With hope in Him mine eyelids close, With sleep refresh my feeble frame; Safe in Thy care may I repose, And wake with praises to Thy Name.

O'er field and forest stealing

Author: Dr. A. H. Reynar, 1840-; Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676 Appears in 4 hymnals Topics: Evening Hymns Lyrics: 1 O'er field and forest stealing, Comes night, all eyelids sealing, And silence holds the air; But wake, my soul, before Him, And gratefully adore Him Who guards thee with a sleepless care. 2 The sun himself hath vanished, By conquering darkness banished, By darkness, foe of day; But Christ my sun ascendeth, New light and joy He lendeth To drive my spirit's gloom away. 3 The day declared His glory, The stars now tell the story, The marvels of His might, So, when this life is ended, I with the saints ascended Shall praise His love in endless light. 4 My body for its resting Of toil-stained garb divesting, In sleep, from care I hide, What dreams and visions cheer me! How Christ, my Lord, comes near me! And sets me by His wounded side. 5 With mind and body jaded, And eyes from watching faded, I long the day to close. Soon comes the time and hour When from all troublous power Kind death shall bring a sweet repose. 6 When eyes shall close for ever, When soul and body sever, What then for me remains? The God of my salvation Will, in His new creation, Give endless bliss for mortal pains. Used With Tune: INNSBRUCK

Another fleeting day is gone

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 59 hymnals Topics: An Evening Hymn Lyrics: 1 Another fleeting day is gone, Slow o'er the west the shadows rise; Swift the soft stealing hours have flown, And night's dark mantle veils the skies. 2 Another fleeting day is gone, Swept from the records of the year; And still with each successive sun, Life's fading visions disappear. 3 Another fleeting day is gone, To tell thy secrets, O my soul; Faithful before th'eternal throne Thy slightest folly 'twill enrol. 4 Another fleeting day is gone, To join the fugitives before: And I, when life's employ is done, shall sleep, to wake in time no more. 5 Another fleeting day is gone, And soon a fairer day shall rise; A day, whose never-setting sun, Shall pour his light o'er cloudless skies. 6 Another fleeting day is gone, In solemn silence rest, my soul; Bend--bend before his awful throne, Who bids the morn and evening roll! Scripture: Job 8:9

And now the wants are told, that brought

Author: William Bright, 1824-1901 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 49 hymnals Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Evening Lyrics: 1 And now the wants are told, that brought thy children to thy knee; here lingering still, we ask for naught, but simply worship thee. 2 The hope of heaven’s eternal days absorbs not all the heart that gives thee glory, love, and praise, for being what thou art. 3 For thou art God, the One, the Same, o’er all things high and bright; and round us, when we speak thy name, there spreads a heaven of light. 4 O wondrous peace, in thought to dwell on excellence Divine; to know that nought in man can tell how fair thy beauties shine! 5 O thou, above all blessing blest, o’er thanks exalted far, thy very greatness is a rest to weaklings as we are; 6 For when we feel the praise of thee a task beyond our powers, we say, 'a perfect God is he, and he is fully ours.' 7 All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost, to thee, while endless ages run. Used With Tune: CREDITON
