Psalm 146

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.331 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Topics: Truth grace, and protection First Line: I'll praise my Maker with my breath Lyrics: I'll praise my Maker with my breath, And when my voice is lost in death, Praise shall employ my nobler powers My days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last, Or immortality endures. Why should I make a man my trust? Princes must die and turn to dust; Vain is the help of flesh and blood: Their breath departs, their pomp, and power, And thoughts, all vanish in an hour, Nor can they make their promise good. Happy the man whose hopes rely On Isr'el's God: he made the sky, And earth, and seas, with all their train: His truth for ever stands secure; He saves th' oppressed, he feeds the poor, And none shall find his promise vain. The Lord hath eyes to give the blind; The Lord supports the sinking mind; He sends the lab'ring conscience peace; He helps the stranger in distress, The widow and the fatherless, And grants the pris'ner sweet release. He loves his saints, he knows them well, But turns the wicked down to hell; Thy God, O Zion! ever reigns: Let every tongue, let every age, In this exalted work engage; Praise him in everlasting strains. I'll praise him while he lends me breath; And when my voice is lost in death, Praise shall employ my nobler powers: My days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last, Or immortality endures. Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.LXX (1816) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Protection against Personal Enemies Lyrics: 1 In haste, O God, attend my call, Nor hear my cries in vain; O let thy speed prevent my fall, And still my hope sustain. 2 When foes insidious wound my name, And tempt my soul astray, Then let them fall with lasting shame, To their own plots a prey. 3 While all that love thy name rejoice, And glory in thy word, In thy salvation raise their voice, And magnify the Lord. 4 O thou my help in time of need, Behold my sore dismay; In pity hasten to my aid, Nor let thy grace delay. My God in whom are all the springs

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.LVII (1816) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Praise for Protection Lyrics: 1 My God in whom are all the springs, Of boundless love, and grace unknown, Hide me beneath thy spreading wings, Till the dark cloud is overblown. 2 Up to the heav’ns I send my cry, The Lord will my desires perform; He sends his angel from the sky, And saves me from the threat’ning storm. 3 Be thou exalted, O my God, Above the heav’ns where angels dwell; Thy pow'r on earth be known abroad, And land to land thy wonders tell. 4 My heart is fix'd; my song shall raise Immortal honours to thy name; Awake, my tongue, to sound his praise, My tongue, the glory of my frame. 5 High o’er the earth his mercy reigns, And reaches to the utmost sky; His truth to endless years remains, When lower worlds dissolve and die. 6 Be thou exalted, O my God, Above the heav’ns, where angels dwell; Thy pow'r on earth be known abroad, And land to land thy wonders tell. O come, let us sing to the Lord a new song

Hymnal: A Collection of Psalms and Hymns for Publick Worship #CLXI (1789) Topics: Public Thanksgiving for national Blessings Thanks for National Protection Lyrics: 1 O come, let us sing to the Lord a new song, And praise him to whom all our praises belong! While we enter his temple with gladness and joy, Let a psalm of thanksgiving our voices employ! O come, to his name let us joyfully sing! For the Lord is a great and omnipotent King; By his word were the heavens and the host of them made, And of the round world the foundations he laid. 2 He stilleth the waves of the boisterous sea, And the tumults of men, more outrageous than they; Thy goodness, O Lord! let the people confess, Whom wars do not waste, nor proud tyrants oppress, And devoutly contemplate thy wonderful ways, Thou who turnest the fierceness of men to thy praise! Then our lands in due season shall yield their increase, And the Lord give his people the blessings of peace. Languages: English

How honourable is the Place

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.VIII (1766) Topics: Protection of the Church Lyrics: 1 How honourable is the Place, Where we adoring stand, Sion, the Glory of the Earth, And Beauty of the Land! 2 Bulwarks of mighty Grace defend The City where we dwell; The Walls, of strong Salvation made, Defy th' Assaults of Hell. 3 Lift up the everlasting Gates, The Doors wide open fling; Enter ye Nations that obey The statutes of our King. 4 Here shall you taste unmingled Joys, And live in perfect Peace; You that have known JEHOVAH's Name, And ventur'd on his Grace. 5 Trust in the Lord, for ever trust, And banish all your Fears; Strength in the Lord JEHOVAH dwells; eternal as his Years. 6 What though the Rebels dwell on high, His Arm shall bring them low; Low and the Caverns of the Grave, Their lofty Head shall bow. 7 On Babylon our Feet shall tread, In that rejoicing Hour; The Ruins of her Walls shall spread A Pavement for the Poor. Lo, what a glorious Sight appears

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.XXI (1766) Topics: Protection of the Church Lyrics: 1 Lo, what a glorious Sight appears To our believing Eyes! The Earth and Seas are past away, And the old rolling Skies. 2 From the third Heav'n where God resides, That holy, happy Place, The New Jerusalem comes down Adorn'd with shining Grace. 3 Attending Angels shout for Joy, And the bright Armies sing, Mortals, behold the sacred Seat Of your descending King. 4 The God of Glory down to Men Removes his bless'd Abode; Men, the dear Objects of his Grace, And he the loving God. 5 His own soft Hand shall wipe the Tears, From ev'ry weeping Eye, And Pains, and Groans, and Griefs, and Fears, And Death itself shall die. 6 How long, dear Saviour, oh how long, Shall this bright Hour delay?
